For overseas guests who plan to marry in Victoria, Melbourne Private Marriage Registry can provide the perfect wedding ceremony and venue as a very affordable service for you. Before you can be legally married in Australia, you will need to sign a Notice of Intended Marriage Form. There are special requirements if you are getting your NOIM form witnessed overseas.
The Notice of Intended Marriage form can be obtained from the Australian High Commission, Embassy or the Australian Foreign Affairs Department in your Country. Alternatively the Notice of Intended Marriage form can be downloaded here: NOIM form.
Read the form carefully. The back of the NOIM form indicates who can witness your signatures on this form for you. As supporting documentation for your Notice of Intention to Marry form you will need your original Birth Certificates/non-Australian passports, and if either of you have been married before you will need to produce proof of how the last marriage ended i.e original death certificate, divorce, decree absolute or nullity order.

First you will need to have your identity documents sighted by an Australian consulate or embassy official, a Notary public or a local member of police.

*Please note, if you submit your NOIM to us by email, you will need to bring the original with you to Australia for your celebrant to sight in order for us to legally submit your marriage.
*If you don’t have the original copies of any documents you should be able to have these certified by an Australian consulate or embassy official, a Notary public or a local member of police.
The NOIM must be lodged no less than one month prior to and no more than eighteen months prior to the wedding date. When you arrive in Australia we can arrange all other legal paperwork for the wedding.
On the day of your wedding you will be given a presentation Marriage Certificate, (or a party certificate) however if you wish to obtain a copy of the Certificate of Marriage to take home with you before you leave Australia, you will be required to apply to the Births Deaths & Marriages in Melbourne. This is quickest when done in person at their offices in Melbourne. This can, however, be applied for by mail at a later time when you return to your home country.
